BackgroundB.A. Illustration, Manchester Polytechnic 1978
Post Graduate Diploma in Ceramics, distinction, Goldsmiths 1992 M.A. Ceramics, distinction, Uclan 2013 The nature and characteristics of materials interest me as well as processes that provoke a dialogue between what materials do and how I intervene, the tension between chance and control. This idea is central to my practice both in working with clay and in drawing, the call and response to process and to the landscape that inspires and informs the work. |
My work takes inspiration from the tideline, responding to the movement of water over sand: ripples, channels and indents and the small objects the sea gives up to land, My eye and hand are always drawn to edges and curves and particularities of detail and texture, work is extremely tactile and each piece is unique, Ceramics are hand-built from porcelain using pinching and coiling methods. I work slowly; porcelain needs careful treatment, My methods are developed through experimentation , I embed textures into each piece and after firing apply pigments to the surface and then wash back, layering in colour and revealing textures and unique markings. I finish the work with wax and in some pieces inlay wax into holes and crevices. Drawings are on oriental paper in layered washes of inks made by myself from high quality pigments, occasionally including found materials from specific locations in this way embedding trace into the work. |
